NXT TEAM WINS NATIONAL AWARD IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN
GREENVILLE, SC – NXT, in collaboration with the Regional Physician Network, Clemson University Architecture + Health program and Pazdan-Smith Group Architects, has been presented with a Healthcare Environment Award by the Center for Health Design. The team of designers, clinicians and researchers won the award for its study in redefining the office of Family Medicine. This is the second national award the design study has received since the project was commissioned in 2009.
The purpose of the study was to holistically explore the processes and spaces of current family practice environments in an effort to optimize the practice of family medicine and to enhance the patient experience.
“This study is a natural evolution of our design studies addressing the inpatient room,” said Tom Jennings, founder of NXT. “We understand the healthcare experience takes in a number of patient environments, outside the hospital and throughout the community. It’s our mission to improve those experiences through effective design and workflow processes.”
In designing a new environmental model for family medicine, the design team addressed circulation zones relative to clinical staff and patient traffic, modular room and furnishing designs, the impact of natural light and views, and the integration of wireless technology with across a number of clinical and customer service platforms. The research team utilized several testing methodologies, including literature reviews, observational research, collaborative work sessions, and in-class academic discussions.
“This case study demonstrates an effort to seamlessly integrate workflow, technology and the physical environment in an outpatient prototype for family medicine,” said Dina Battisto, associate professor architecture at Clemson University. “Our belief is that the physical environment can work in concert with clinical operations and that staff can fully adopt and embrace a cultural change.”
